Arachnus are a species of creatures found on SR388. At the near-top of the food chain, they are a very fearsome. The biped is distinguished by its three-toothed maw, segmented eyes, elongated neck, the hard shell on its back, and the large claws on its fore-arms. It is known to curl into an armored ball when threatened, and only periodically emerges from the ball in order to attack with either its claws, or by spitting fire from its mouth.
In Metroid II: Return of Samus, Samus can fight an Arachnus. It is an optional boss and defeating it will give Samus the useful Spring Ball ability. Only Morph Ball Bombs can damage it. An easy way to fight it is to trap it behind the statue on the left side of the room, and then go into morph ball form and bomb it from atop of the statue as it attempts to repeatedly escape.

Arachnus-X in Metroid Fusion
In Metroid Fusion, Samus encounters an Arachnus in the Main Deck as the game's first boss encounter. Once Samus defeats Arachnus-X, it she gains back her Morph Ball ability.
Arachnus is also known by the name "Mulcalah", most notably in the Metroid Fusion soundtrack.
