Arachnus are a species of creatures found on SR388. At the near-top of the food chain, they are a very fearsome. The biped is distinguished by its three-toothed maw, segmented eyes, elongated neck, the hard shell on its back, and the large claws on its forearms. It is known to curl into an armored ball when threatened, and only periodically emerges from the ball in order to attack with either its claws, or by spitting fire from its mouth.
In Metroid II: Return of Samus, Samus can fight an Arachnus. It is an optional boss and defeating it will give Samus the useful Spring Ball ability. It is found posing as an item in the hands of a Chozo Statue. Only Morph Ball Bombs can damage it. An easy way to fight it is to trap it behind the statue on the left side of the room, and then go into Morph Ball form and bomb it from atop of the statue as it attempts to repeatedly escape.

[edit] Arachnus-X
In Metroid Fusion, Samus encounters an Arachnus in the Main Deck as the game's first boss encounter, though this one is actually an X Parasite mimicking an Arachnus. Through gene manipulation, the X has enhanced the Arachnus form's attacks, as well as given a new one that is not normally in its genome (notably, the sonic waves). Once Samus defeats Arachnus-X, she regains her Morph Ball ability.
- Arachnus is also known by the name "Mulcalah", most notably in the Metroid Fusion soundtrack.
