[edit] Biography

B.O.X. was a six-legged, spider-like security robot designed to protect the BSL Research Station. The organic components in B.O.X.s neural network allowed it to be infected by the X, though it is unsure whether this happened before or after Samus first encountered it.

[edit] Encounters

[edit] Sector 3 (PYR)

Samus first encountered B.O.X. in Sector 3. After obtaining Super Missile data Samus' way back was blocked, and the floor ruptured. Following rumbling noises lead her back to the Data Room, which B.O.X. was destroying, either as reprogrammed by SA-X, or as an X host itself. B.O.X. rammed Samus, and could fire grenades that released two pillars of fire in either direction. These pillars alternated between short and tall. Samus hung from the monkeybars above and fired her newly acquired Super Missiles into its core, which slowly broke apart the machine to reveal B.O.X.s neural network inside. When the neural net was revealed, B.O.X. began to flash and escaped through the roof, also giving Samus a way back to the Navigation Room.

[edit] Sector 6 (NOC)

Later during the mission, B.O.X. was positively identified as an X host. Samus' computer told her that the "organic components that form its neural network" were infected by the X, and ordered her to terminate it where it was last seen, in Sector 6. After a short detour, Samus found B.O.X. in a room she had previously passed through. It was similar to the room where they fought in Sector 3, as Samus could bomb the ceiling to reveal monkeybars, but the floor was now covered by a shallow pool of water. B.O.X.s core was completely exposed now, which short circuited in the water and electrocuted Samus whenever she fell in. The B.O.X. now fired a volley of four seeking missiles instead of grenades. Apart from these, B.O.X. retained the same tactics and weaknesses, though Samus' Plasma Beam upgrade allowed her to attack the core without missiles.

When Samus destroyed the core, the neural network flew out from the robot and transformed into a Hard Core-X. Absorbing this recovered her Wave Beam.

Worthy of note is the fact that the brain resembles a miniature Aurora Unit, suggesting that they can be installed into portable weapons platforms.
