Barbed War Wasps are the more dangerous cousins of the War Wasp and are distinguished by their emerald green abdomen and their projectile stingers.

Description[]

On Tallon IV, a colony of Barbed War Wasps resided in a huge hive in the Burn Dome of the Chozo Ruins. Samus travels to the room and finds the Incinerator Drone, which attacks her. Damaging the machine causes it to shoot fire into the wasps' nest, provoking them into attacking her. Once the machine destroys the nest, Samus never encounters Barbed War Wasps again in Metroid Prime.

Samus later encounters Barbed War Wasps during the events of Metroid Prime Hunters, during her first visit to Arcterra. On this icy planet, they make their nests on the power lines of the Ice Hive, and they emerge to attack when the reactivated power lines send electricity coursing through their nests. Blue and Red Barbed War Wasps also inhabit the Alimbic Cluster, found on the planets Arcterra and Alinos respectively, where they have adapted further to the climates of both planets.

Barbed War Wasps attack by launching a poisonous stinger, which does a small amount of damage and slight visor interference. In Metroid Prime, they are the only War Wasps to have a ranged attack, while in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes the normal War Wasps found on Aether attack this way by default. Unlike standard and Ram War Wasps, the horns on the shells of Barbed War Wasps curve up and forward over their heads.

On Tallon IV, these Wasps appear to make their nests on the ceiling rather than a wall, but on Arcterra, their nests are located on the walls like other War Wasp hives (albeit along power lines). Barbed War Wasps also seem very resilient to extreme temperatures, as shown by the creation of their nests in both the Burn Dome and the frozen world of Arcterra, as well as the fact that the Incinerator Drone merely agitated the insects with its flame as opposed to killing. If acquired early via hacking, the Plasma Beam merely irritates these creatures.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

Barbed War Wasp
"Barbed War Wasps only appear in the boss battle with the Incinerator Drone. Their hive sits directly above the Incinerator Drone. The Barbed War Wasps get upset when the searing heat from the malfunctioning Drone reaches their home. Barbed War Wasps can shoot their barbed stingers a great distance and regrow them in seconds. It's best to destroy them as they are coming out of their hive. The Power Beam is the most effective weapon here because of its speed."

BARBED WAR WASP
MORPHOLOGY
"An airborne insect with the evolved ability to launch its stinger at prey. The Barbed War Wasp is a highly aggressive member of the War Wasp family, this insect can propel the tip of its stinger up to 20 meters. COMBAT TIPS
"The Barbed War Wasp is very aggressive indeed, and attacks repeatedly unless destroyed. The key to managing Barbed War Wasps is to eliminate their War Wasp Hives with the Charge Beam, Power Beam, or a Missile. It's crucial to take out the Hive, however, because it will continue to pour out Barbed War Wasps until it's destroyed."

Metroid Prime Official Perfect Guide[]

MINI-BOSS: INCINERATOR DRONE AND BARBED WAR WASPS
"Transform into a Morph Ball and move toward the inside "rung" of this fire-spraying Drone--as long as you stay low to the ground like this, you won't get hit. When the spinning flames pass overhead, run back out of the perimeter in upright-form and aim at the red glowing spot on the apex of the Incinerator Drone--fire a Missile at it to cause damage. Unfortunately, this first Missile will force the flames to rise up and heat the overhead Hive--in turn releasing an unending wave of Barbed War Wasps for the duration of the battle. You'll also see that the flame-axis will momentarily tilt so that its jets are no longer parallel to the ground, thus requiring you to jump over or stand under whichever flame expulsion is coming near your person. In the middle of all this, you'll also find it necessary, of course, to destroy the Wasps that will attack from overhead. Four Missiles will effectively junk the Incinerator Drone. You will then receive the Morph Ball Bomb."

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version of Metroid Prime, Barbed War Wasps are referred to as Poison Wasps (ポイズンワスプ Poizunwasupu?). In Hunters, Barbed War Wasps do not exist; instead, they are simply referred to as generic War Wasps (ウォーワスプ Wōwasupu?).
