A Berserker Knight is a Space Pirate heavily mutated by Phazon. They have Phazite plating on their weak spot. Normally to destroy the plating, shooting the purple orbs will damage it. Then the plating will be destroyed and the weak spot will be open to attack. However with the use of the X-Ray Visor in combination with the Nova Beam, Samus can target an organ to instantly kill the creature. Some Berserker Knights become Berserker Lords after surviving the highest levels of Phazon Corruption. Ghor defeats one in close combat on Norion by stabbing the weak point.
The first time Samus must defeat a Berserker Knight is in the Bryyo Thorn Jungle, the second is when Samus must escort the Demolition Troopers on the Pirate Homeworld. Thankfully, at this time Samus has the Nova Beam, so it can be killed easily. In the Bryyo Thorn Jungle, Samus can call her Gunship in for a bombing run and kill the Berserker Knight in one hit.
They are similar to Elite Pirates and Ingsmashers and play the same role. They also show little concern for their fellow Space Pirates and will even use them as projectiles. This is likely due to their brain tissue having deteriorated due to Phazon infusion.
Oddly, despite the Space Pirates in the original Prime being very hunched, the Elite Pirates stand tall and are not so hunched. However, the Pirates in Corruption are less hunched (only the neck is bent), yet the Beserker Knights and Lords are very bent in structure.
[edit] Logbook entry
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: "A Berserker Knight's Phazite armor must be removed before unit can be damaged: only the Phazon-based projectile attacks the creature fires can destroy it. The Berserker Knight serves as a shocking example of the lengths the Space Pirates will go to in their quest for dominance. Heavily mutated by Phazon exposure, the unit is nearly mindless, driven by battle lust."
