The Choot species is nearly identical to the Chute Leech found on SR388 in Metroid II: Return of Samus.

Connection to the Chute Leech

Both species have flat bodies and lie dormant until another organism, such as Samus walks by. It jumps into the air and then glides down, swaying from side to side using its parachute-like body.

The Choot has rows of teeth visible on its underside, unlike the Chute Leech; they also seem to possess only a single pair of eyes, and are colored green-purple. They are more of a nuisance than a serious threat. While they are mostly seen on dry land, some can be found submerged underwater near the Wrecked Ship.

The Chute Leech in Metroid: Samus Returns looks identical to the version seen in Super Metroid and Fusion.

Choot sprites

Sprites for the Choot in both Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.

Before the events of Metroid Fusion, several Choots were captured and brought on board the BSL Station for studies. Eventually, all Choots (along with most other bioforms inside the station) were infected and/or mimicked by the X Parasites. The Choot-X variant is colored blue, appears to have rough skin (contrary to the natural variant) and glides down much slower and without the swaying effect; on the way down, it will periodically spit globs of acid. It also has noticeably larger fangs. The new additions are most likely due to X tampering with their hosts' DNA.

Metroid Fusion: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide refers to Choots as "flat, blue creatures".
