Down Smash Attack (Samus)

Samus using her Spinning Leg Sweep in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

The Down Smash Attack[1] is an attack used by all characters in the Super Smash Bros. series. A powerful attack that is directed at the ground, the Down Smash Attack is performed by holding certain buttons for a few seconds. Samus and Zero Suit Samus each have their own Down Smash.

Samus's Down Smash Attack, the Spinning Leg Sweep[2] (スピニングローキック?)[3], has her extend her leg on the ground and perform a fast and sweeping 360° kick that deals at least 16% damage from the front, and 14% from the back. This is the attack she uses in all four games in which she appears. It is best used for KOing an opponent near the ledge of a stage, but knockback wise, is the weakest Down Smash Attack in the original Super Smash Bros.. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the attack's power is heavily reduced. It only deals 10% damage with the front kick, and 12% with the back, once again making it one of the weakest Down Smash Attacks in the game. However, the back kick deals more knockback to opponents.

Zero Suit Samus's Down Smash Attack, the Slant Paralyzer[4], involves her Paralyzer. During the attack, she will aim her Paralyzer down and shoot it at the ground in front of her. The attack will only hit opponents in front of her. While it deals only 11% damage and delays knockback, it will stun the opponent for a period of time that is dependent on their damage percentage. Zero Suit Samus can then take advantage of their stunned state with another attack, such as a Side Smash Attack or her Boost Kick move. In Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, the Slant Paralyzer is a projectile, so any characters that can absorb projectiles (such as Villager) will be able to do so, however, since it is fired at the ground it cannot be deflected back at Zero Suit Samus; this property was removed in Ultimate.
