Dragons are a species found primarily on Zebes, specifically in magma-filled areas.

Description[]

Dragons resemble terrestrial seahorses with reptilian features. They are impervious to molten rock, and they have the ability to launch balls of fire from their mouths. Their main method of attack is to hide themselves in magma, and ambush prey when they are close.

Metroid[]

Dragons are found exclusively in Norfair. They hide in lava in order to surprise and attack Samus. They are purple or pink in appearance.

Metroid: Zero Mission[]

Dragons appear in Zero Mission as well. They reside in Norfair as usual. Their method of attack is spitting blobs of lava at Samus. In Hard Mode they appear in additional rooms, including the room leading to the Ice Beam, to increase the challenge of precise platforming across lava.

Super Metroid[]

Dragons return in Super Metroid, behaving largely the same as in Metroid and Zero Mission. They can now be found in Ridley's Hideout in the depths of Norfair, where they are submerged in scalding-hot lava with no ill effects.

A bipedal version of this creature is present in Crateria and Norfair, known as Alcoon.

Trivia[]

  • Dragons' close resemblance to seahorses stems from Japanese culture. Notably, the Japanese word for seahorse (竜の落し子?) contains the kanji for dragon (?).
  • In the Captain N: The Game Master episode Game Boy, Princess Lana encounters a dragon while jumping across platforms suspended above lava. While not explicitly referred to as a Dragon from Metroid, this monster shares several similarities in its design with the Metroid enemy, and the episode also features numerous other Metroid creatures (including Rios, Sidehoppers, Kraid, Ridley, and Metroids), making it a very likely reference.
  • Dragons also appear in NES Remix 2 as one of many enemies challenging Samus, typically in games where she must not take damage.
