"Brinstar Brains" are unidentified bioforms which appear exclusively in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Description[]

The "Brinstar Brains" are alien organisms that resemble enormous brains. There are two "Brinstar Brains" in Super Smash Bros.[1] The most prominent brain is seen in the background of the main Brinstar stage with a hanging tentacle like stem. In Planet Zebes: Brinstar, the main brain hangs from the ceiling in the far background of the stage, suspended by growths that resemble a combination of barnacle-like material and Norfair's glass bubbles; more of this material hangs from underneath the brain. In Planet Zebes: Brinstar Depths, a second "Brinstar Brain" is embedded into the center platform; in Super Smash Bros. Melee, it is encased in barbed metallic rings, but it is exposed in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

When left idle, the "Brinstar Brain" gently pulsates with a steady rhythm. However, it becomes agitated when exposed to rising acid in Brinstar or whenever Kraid strikes the stage in Brinstar Depths. In this state, it starts thrashing violently and large pustules appear on the brain's surface; in Brinstar, its brain stem can be seen swinging wildly. It calms down after a moment, and the pustules retract.

The size of the brain in Brinstar is difficult to estimate, but Plasma Scream shows Samus Aran's Gunship in front of the brain, making it appear massive in comparison.[1]

Very little information is known about the "Brinstar Brains", since it goes unmentioned by Super Smash Bros. media such as websites and guidebooks.[2] Despite appearing on Brinstar and Brinstar Depths, the "Brinstar Brains" do not appear to originate from the Metroid series. It is a common misconception that this organism is Mother Brain, but it lacks several of the Space Pirate leader's characteristic features, such as the single eye and the spikes protruding from the brain, as well as this brain being dark brown rather than Mother Brain's trademark red.; furthermore, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Ultimate, Mother Brain can be summoned separately as an Assist Trophy. Therefore, it is much more likely that the "Brinstar Brains" are simply an original creation of the Super Smash Bros. development team, intended to evoke the alien aesthetics of the Metroid series without actually representing any specific canonical creature.

Trivia[]

  • In Ultimate, the "Brinstar Brain" itself remains static, although its stem and pustules still move as though it was properly animated. This causes the pustules to appear as though they are sliding across the brain's surface.[2]
