Mari Yoshimura #2 (マリ・ヨシムラ 2号 Mari Yoshimura ni-gō?), also known by the nickname Mari Yo, is the pet creature of Samus Aran in the first Metroid-related comic in The Shape of Happiness.

Biography[]

In the Year 20X5, Mari Yoshimura #2 accompanied Samus as she reported to Galactic Federation Police HQ to receive her Zero Mission orders. It initially stood upon the shoulder of her Power Suit. When the Police-Man realized that Samus ran out of energy, Mari Yo sheepishly scratched the back of its head.

Samus and Mari Yoshimura checked into Hotel New Galaxy the night before disembarking on their new mission. Their room was visited by a bellboy, which was actually a Metroid assassin in disguise. Mari Yo jumped in the way of the Metroid as it made an attempt on Samus's life, and was mortally wounded by the Metroid's knife. This bought Samus enough time to react and kill the Metroid, but Mari Yo died in her arms. Furious, Samus vowed to kill Mother Brain as revenge.

Description[]

Mari Yoshimura #2 appears to be an armadillo-like alien; since armadillos are known for rolling into a ball, Mari Yo's name is likely a reference to the Maru Mari. Mari Yo cannot speak and only communicates in squeaking vocalizations. It seems to be able to sense danger, since it is seen glaring suspiciously at the bellboy before the latter revealed its true identity. Mari Yo is fiercely loyal to Samus, even willing to put itself in mortal danger to protect her.

Trivia[]

  • Samus's nickname for Mari Yoshimura #2, "Mari Yo", might be a pun referencing Mario.
  • Mari Yoshimura is one of the characters featured on the cover of The Shape of Happiness volume 1 redistributed by ASCII Comix.
  • Although The Shape of Happiness is a non-canonical parody comic, Mari Yoshimura precedes several canonical additions in the Metroid storyline. Metroid II: Return of Samus introduces Arachnus, an armadillo-like alien closely associated with Samus's Morph Ball. In Super Metroid, the baby sacrifices itself to save Samus, who takes her vengeance upon Mother Brain. In the Metroid prequel manga, Samus is shown to have a small mammalian pet, Pyonchi.
