Elite Pirate Upsilon, more commonly known as the Omega Pirate, was one of the most powerful Space Pirates ever created and had the potential to be a new standard for the Pirates. The Omega Pirate was considered, by Science Team, the zenith of Project Helix. Fused with Phazon reserves, the Omega Pirate was capable of regeneration and wave quake generation. It was destroyed by Samus Aran when she took the Phazon Mines by force, providing her with the Phazon Suit upgrade. The Berserker Knights and Berserker Lords from Metroid Prime 3: Corruption are most likely the result of continued research on infusing Pirates with Phazon, making the Elite and Omega Pirates somewhat their ancestors.

Biography[]

Elite Pirate Upsilon was created by the Space Pirates research team to be the ultimate Space Pirate. After discovering Upsilon's very high tolerance for Phazon, the team infused this monster with Phazon far beyond safety restrictions. Fortunately for them, the results were positive, resulting in a super soldier which retained its health and intelligence. It was one of a limited series of Space Pirates to be infused with Phazon successfully (the other being the Phazon Elite). Its creators dubbed their creation the Omega Pirate, and placed it in stasis in the Elite Quarters, deep within the Phazon Mines on Tallon IV.

Abilities and weapons[]

The Omega Pirate was equipped with wave-quake generators, two Plasma Incendiary Launchers (all other Elite Pirates carry a single Plasma Artillery Cannon), a Chameleon Manta for cloaking, and, most importantly, the ability to heal damaged tissue and organs by absorbing Phazon. The only issue with the regenerative abilities is that it is extremely vulnerable when it is cloaked, as all energy is drawn from its defense systems leaving it open for attack. It also possesses an energy-siphon system to absorb beam-based attacks; along with its other protections, this renders it nigh-invulnerable. Missiles will not be affected by the energy-siphon system.

In addition to the Pirate's weapons, it can also summon various beam troopers to deal with intruders.

Battle[]

Omega Pirate breaks free

Samus faces the released Omega Pirate.

In combat, the Omega Pirate is one of the most formidable foes that the Space Pirates can field. It has powerful armor that can repel beam attacks, and it also uses an energy-siphon field, drawing in most attacks and using them for energy; however, Missiles and Super Missiles are semi-immune to the siphon's effect.

Its primary mode of attack is a Wave Quake Generator, which it uses by slamming its hands into the ground to create an electric shockwave. This moves outward in a ring of electricity, though it can be jumped over by a skilled opponent. It also possesses two destructible Plasma Artillery Cannons on its back, which it can fire to launch two huge missiles at an enemy from a far distance. In Metroid Prime Remastered, the cannons flash red when receiving damage from weaponry. If an opponent draws too close to its massive monstrous body, the creature will simply use its huge claws to crush and slash anyone near it.

There are only four weaknesses in its Phazon Armor: the glowing, Phazon-charged plates on its shoulders and its legs. Throughout the entire battle, these plates are vulnerable to Missile barrages, which can be sped up using the Rapid Fire Missile technique. They are also vulnerable to Super Missiles, though the legs are less so than the arms. When it drops its siphon field to use an attack, these four spots will be open to attack, from both Beams and Missiles. Its Wave-Quake Attack is a perfect time for this, as the attack leaves it open for a good few seconds.

Fighting Omega Pirate

Samus battling the Omega Pirate.

In the PAL and Wii versions of Prime, the Omega Pirate is also highly susceptible to the newly-acquired Power Bomb: not only can the Power Bomb bypass the energy-siphon system, but it can also destroy 2-4 Phazon plates in one attempt, making it easier to weaken the Pirate and send it into its next phase. Once all its plates are destroyed, the Omega Pirate's unique affinity for Phazon comes into play. It will activate its Chameleon Manta, becoming invisible long enough to move to one of the large pools of Phazon in the room.

While its Manta renders it invisible in the normal and infrared spectrums, it can still be detected with an X-Ray Visor, and this is the only time that the Omega Pirate itself is vulnerable to attack. However, the Pirate will only become visible to the X-Ray Visor when it starts absorbing Phazon, so Samus must keep all the Phazon pools under surveillance to catch the Omega Pirate. After a short time in a Phazon pool, it will regenerate the Phazon plates, return to visibility, and resume attacking. If damaged enough before regenerating all its plates, it will become invisible to all Visors again and reappear at another Phazon pool. If Samus can reach it in time, she can hit it enough to make it move to another pool, but it is generally inevitable that it will manage to regain its plates before she can do enough damage to kill it. A quick and efficient way to damage the Omega Pirate is with the use of Super Missiles. Three Super Missiles will defeat the Pirate instantly (on Normal/Veteran difficulties). While it is vulnerable, though, it will summon Trooper Pirates to harry attackers. These Pirates are equipped with beam-based armors, weak only to certain kinds of attacks. These pirates aren't immune to the Omega Pirate's attacks, though; if they are still around when its armor regenerates, it will often kill them with its own Wave-Quake Attack, apparently having no regard for the lives of its compatriots. However, those which are outside the Wave-Quake radius or are clinging to the walls for a better vantage point will usually stay alive after this attack.

Omega Pirate death

The Omega Pirate collapses on Samus and spews pure Phazon into her Suit.

They also cannot survive Power Bomb blasts, and as such releasing a Power Bomb is the quickest way to dispatch the Pirates. Samus can either kill them or just dodge their attacks and focus on the Omega Pirate since they all disappear after the Omega Pirate's death.

After being damaged enough, the Omega Pirate collapses on top of Samus. The Phazon inside it is absorbed into Samus's Power Suit, and she gains the Phazon Suit. The Omega Pirate's corpse explodes.

Other appearances[]

Metroid 1.5[]

The Omega Pirate was included in a multiplayer mode in Metroid 1.5, an early design draft that ultimately became Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The mode would reenact the battle in Prime in a 3 on 1 match where one player controlled the Omega Pirate, with the other three controlling bounty hunters.

3 on 1:

One-player controls an omega Pirate, the others control bounty hunters. This is basically a remake of the Omega Pirate battle in the singer[sic] player game, only this time, its multiplayer and could be a bit more intense.

Rules:
Bot or Human player permitted
Split screen
For the Omega Pirate’s UI, the camera will be raised significantly to emphasize height
Omega Pirate can call in support of trooper pirates and recharge via phazon.
A multi-player variant on the boss battle from the single player game, we could use the same arena or create a new one.

Metroid Prime Pinball[]

The Omega Pirate also appears in Metroid Prime Pinball as the boss of the Phazon Mines table, guarding the Missile Launcher upgrade.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force[]

The Omega Pirate is mentioned in Metroid Prime: Federation Force during the debriefing of M03: Smokestack. General Alex Miles remarks on the size of the Space Pirates: "They were just about the same size as an Omega Pirate!"

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

BOSS BATTLE: OMEGA PIRATE
"As you enter the Elite Quarters, you see the most fearsome sight yet: a gigantic Elite Pirate known as the Omega Pirate. This beast is at least two or three times larger than anything you've fought so far.
The Omega Pirate attacks just like any Elite Pirate. It slams its fists into the ground to create an electric shock wave. You can double jump over the waves to avoid them. It also has cannons on its back, which it will use only if you're on the opposite side of the room.
What makes the Omega Pirate unique is its phenomenal defensive powers. It can absorb beam weapon attacks when it holds out its left hand. But it also can't be harmed until you've destroyed the four Phazon deposits on its armor.
Use your Plasma Beam and carefully dodge the wave attacks while blasting the Phazon deposits. Stay close to the Omega Pirate, but just out of striking distance. If you get too close, the Omega Pirate will begin swiping at you with its enormous fists.
When you have destroyed all four Phazon Deposits, the Omega Pirate literally vanishes. As it disappears, anywhere from two to four Troopers of random types enter the room to distract you while the boss repairs its armor.
Quickly destroy one or two Troopers by using the appropriate beam weapon. In cases where there are four Troopers, destroy whichever Troopers can be eliminated most easily (normally Ice Troopers or Plasma Troopers). Use your combo weapons. Speed is extremely important here, so hold nothing back.
After fighting for a few seconds, switch to your X-ray Visor and scan the room for the Omega Pirate. It will be over one of the Phazon patches on the floor. While the Omega Pirate repairs its armor, you can shoot its core to cause actual physical damage. This is the only time you can hurt the Omega Pirate. Be sure to use the Plasma Beam; it has the highest rate of fire, and you shouldn't need to charge your shots to cause significant damage.
If you're really fast, you'll cause the Omega Pirate to collapse while it repairs. It will then disappear again. Quickly focus on any Troopers that remain in the room, then search for the Omega Pirate again. It will have moved to a different Phazon Patch. Retarget the boss and let it have it. If you seriously injure the Omega Pirate a second time, it'll disappear and more Troopers will enter the room.
The real trick to this battle is to avoid being caught up in fights with the Troopers. Their only purpose is to distract you long enough for the boss to repair itself, and they're very good at it. Eliminate as many as you can in about 10 seconds, then search the room for the boss. If you don't see it, quickly pick on the Troopers for a couple more seconds, then look for the boss again. Once you see the boss, ignore the Troopers completely and just focus on causing damage to the Omega Pirate while you can.
Continue repeating the process of destroying the Phazon deposits, blasting the Troopers and damaging the boss until the Omega Pirate is history. Upon victory, Samus receives the Phazon Suit. She can now pass through Phazon without taking damage, and her shielding is slightly stronger than before, so she'll take less damage from attacks."
Omega Pirate
Found In: Phazon Mines
Recommended Weapon: Super Missile
Weak Spot: Phazon deposits on armor
"The Omega Pirate is immensely powerful, but not as tough as it seems. It uses several attacks, including a shock wave and missiles, but the real threat is its cronies, which appear anytime you've eliminated the boss's Phazon supply.
You must eliminate several Phazon deposits on the creature's armor; these are what give it power. Dodge its attacks and blast away at the blue Phazon until each piece is obliterated. Once you've gotten them all, the boss will become invisible and try to repair itself.
While the boss is busy trying to make repairs, several pirates come to aid it. This ranges from two to four pirates at a time, and it will be a mixture of Power, Wave, Ice, and Plasma Troopers. Don't hold back. Eliminate them by using your combos. You don't have much time before the Omega Pirate completes repairs and rejoins the battle.
Once the Troopers are dealt with, switch to your X-ray Visor and look for the boss. It will be in one of the three Phazon pits around the room. Lock onto its chest and blast away with everything you've got. If you cause significant damage, the boss will vanish again and reappear in a different spot. Be on the lookout, and you can inflict major damage. After seriously injuring the boss twice, it will reappear automatically, and several more Troopers will join the fight.
The real trick is to avoid getting too caught up in the battle with the Troopers. They pose a serious threat, but it's best to quickly eliminate a couple of them and then to turn to the boss. If you spend all of your time fighting the Troopers, the battle can go on forever, or at least until Samus succumbs to the brutal attacks."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

OMEGA PIRATE
A CHINK IN THE ARMOR
"The Omega Pirate has Phazon Armor on its knees and shoulders. Use the Plasma Beam or Super Missiles to blast the armor until it disappears. When the pirate sends out a ground quake, double jump over it and fire away. if it pulls its arm back, jump away or it will swipe you with a large claw."
THE HEART OF THE MATTER
"After you destroy the Phazon Armor, the Omega Pirate will vanish. Use the X-Ray Scanner to locate the cloaked beast, then blast it in the heart with Super Missiles or the Plasma Beam."
PIRATE POSSE
"The Omega Pirate will send Troopers after you while it's cloaked. If you have a lot of energy left, ignore the small fry and concentrate on the Omega Pirate."
A NEW SUIT
"After three or four shots to the heart, the Omega Pirate will be no more. Your reward for defeating the monster is the Phazon Suit--an awesome-looking outfit that protects you from radiation damage. If you're low on energy, use the elevator to head upstairs and get an Energy Tank before tracking down the Artifact in the Phazon Mining Tunnel."

Development notes[]

I believe that this boss was the boss I did the quickest because at that point in the project we were getting to the tail end of development and that meant he had to be done quickly so the animator's [sic] and programmers could do their work. Not much else comes to mind about the Omega Pirate.

Mike Sneath[1]

According to Jack Mathews, the Omega Pirate was intended to be a scaled-up Elite Pirate battled alongside waves of Space Pirates, but this plan was abandoned after Kraid was scrapped as a boss.[2] [3]

Bugs and hacking[]

Phazon Gravity Suit

If Samus skips the Gravity Suit and fights the Omega Pirate, she will be wearing the Gravity Suit during the acquisition cutscene (though it quickly turns into the Phazon Suit afterwards).

  • When a Power Bomb is used while the Omega Pirate is in a Phazon pool, a glitch may occur that depletes a third of its health.
  • The Omega Pirate's projectiles may be scanned, which produces a placeholder scan describing them as Elite Pirates and depicting images of a Parasite.[4]This is no longer possible in Metroid Prime Remastered.
  • In the NTSC version, the Omega Pirate cutscene may be skipped within the first few seconds before the Omega Pirate breaks out of its tank, resulting in a glitch nicknamed "Omega Pirate Sleeping" in which the Omega Pirate remains posed in stasis, allowing it to be attacked with ease.
  • If Samus enters the Elite Quarters from the top floor via Hidden World techniques, she is able to fight and defeat the Omega Pirate without triggering cutscenes. However, the cutscene (sans Pirate) will still trigger when she attempts to leave the room, preventing escape and softlocking the game.
  • If the Phazon Beam is unlocked via hacking, it does no damage to the Omega Pirate.
