Ice Combo

Samus using Diamond Dust, in Super Metroid.

The Special Charge Beam Attacks[1] in Super Metroid are a series of secret Charge Combos. The game has four beams other than the Power Beam and Charge Beam, and each has their own Special Charge Beam Attack. They are not separate items and can be used provided that Samus has acquired the Charge Beam, the beam in question, and some Power Bombs.

To use a Special Charge Beam Attack, only the Charge Beam and one other beam must be active in the Samus Screen. Samus must select the Power Bombs as the secondary weapon and then charge up her Arm Cannon; the Charge Combo will fire 120 frames later (2 seconds on NTSC / 2.4 seconds on PAL) without the need to release the fire button. Each costs one Power Bomb per shot. These combos are not necessary to solve any gameplay puzzles, and are included only to provide more frequent and varied use of Power Bomb ammunition.

The following effects are created from using a Special Charge Beam Attack, with names unofficially translated from Nintendo Official Guide Book for Super Metroid:[2]

  • Ice Beam: Diamond Dust (ダイアモンドダスト?) - Four ice bolts circle around Samus like a barrier for a brief time; after approximately 10 seconds, the bolts shoot off in different directions. If she runs into an enemy, one bolt freezes the enemy and disappears. Each bolt deals the same amount of damage as a charged shot of the Ice Beam. Samus cannot fire again until after all four bolts have either been used or dissipated.
  • Wave Beam: Asteroid Belt (アステロイドベルト?) - Four wave bolts cross in an X-shape around Samus. After approximately 3 seconds, moving Samus causes the bolts to warp around her in erratic patterns.
  • Spazer Beam: Stardust Shower (スターダストシャワー?) - Two large spazer bolts circle around Samus before ascending. A rain of sparks descend, striking enemies all around her.
  • Plasma Beam: Emerald Splash (エメラルドスプラッシュ?) - Four ring-shaped plasma bolts spiral around Samus. They spread out, contract back toward Samus, and then shoot off to the corners of the screen. This attack is displayed in the first set of gameplay clips in the game's attract mode.

SPECIAL CHARGE BEAM ATTACKS
"Special Charge Beam attacks can home in handy in certain situations. First, equip the Charge Beam and any one other Beam. Next, make sure that the Power Bomb icon is highlighted. Press and hold the Shot Button until the special attack occurs.
You won't be able to use any of these special attacks if you don't possess the Charge Beam, Power Bombs, and at least one other Beam."
