Shriekers are a plant-like organism that inhabit Torvus Bog in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Upon sensing an intruder, they jettison from the ground and shoot sound waves at the opponent, becoming temporarily invisible. To see them, Samus must use the Echo Visor. Samus can also shoot them when they become visible again, however it is possible to shoot and land a hit on them while they are phasing, but it is difficult. If Samus fires a Missile at the creature, the target lock will malfunction and upon nearing a Shrieker the missile will fly off on an altered course.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Temporary scan

Morphology: Shrieker
Flying plant predator.
Bursts from earth and takes flight. Fires sonic blasts. Generates stealth field that disrupts most Visors.

Logbook entry

A cousin to the Shredder, the Shrieker waits for prey half-buried in the earth. When it detects a target, it erupts from the ground and takes flight. It releases a sonic blast to stun its target, then sweeps in to feast. Shriekers can generate a stealth field that disrupts most Visors, making them difficult to attack.

Metroid Prime 2: Dark Echoes Q&A[]

QUESTION: In the Space Pirate stronghold, if you look at the monitors, it seems like they have the concept of having pets. Is this true? From the outside I cannot imagine what sort of pets they would have.

ANSWER: If there are any wildlife that they like, they can take them in as pets. It seems like they like Grenchlers, for example. Personally, I thought it would be fun to walk a Shrieker on a leash...[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Visors affected by the aforementioned stealth field includes the Dark Visor. Because of this, only the Echo Visor can be used to detect Shriekers while in their cloaked state.
  • The Shrieker may have been inspired by Mandrake folklore. According to the legend, when the root of a Mandrake is dug up, it screams and kills all who hear it.
