A Stoke[1] is an unused creature in Super Metroid. It is a very small Crocomire that runs around spewing small flames at Samus. When it touches a wall or reaches an edge of a platform, it will turn the other way around and continue to crawl in said direction in a pattern. The Stoke's AI is incomplete; it cannot recognize slopes and runs through them. With only the Power Suit active, a Stoke can deal 5 damage each with its projectiles and delivers 40 units of damage to Samus via contact damage.

Stokes are loaded in RAM in the Crateria room with a small Morph Ball tunnel that requires the Bomb, leading to a Missile Tank. Despite having an original palette similar to its larger counterpart, it does not always load said palette.[2] Its palettes can be toggled to reveal other colorations of itself, but it may require extensive testing to load the Stoke's original red coloration properly.

Trivia[]

  • Stoke behaving as a smaller weaker counterpart to Crocomire is similar to how Mini-Kraid and the unused Fake Ridley are, acting as minor variations to their original look-a-likes (Kraid and Ridley respectively).
    • Of the three, Mini-Kraid is the only weak copy to actually be used within a Metroid title.
