Gerutas can survive in the extreme heats of Norfair and have a fierce aerial dive attack. They attack in a similar manner as Reos and Holtz.

Their thick armour-plated wings make them vicious predators, and they are near the top of the food chain on Zebes - few species have been seen to attack them. A natural flamejet system produces the thrust necessary for them to dive at their prey or enemies.

Gerutas also appear as X-hosts or mimics in sectors 1 and 5 on board the BSL Station after the destruction of Zebes in Metroid Fusion. Interestingly, this variant, also known as the Geruboss, is most common in Sector 5, which is a sub-zero area, and do not appear at all in Sector 3, the super-heated area that is akin to their native habitat in Norfair. These variants are larger in size and also appear to have gained enormous, metallic pincer arms. These differences are most likely caused by the X Parasites' ability to manipulate their victims' DNA. Another possible variant is the Geruda.
