The Hyper Beam was first officially introduced in Super Metroid (although Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption used the Beam first in terms of chronology). The Hyper Beam is a special and incredibly powerful beam. The beam itself is a long line of shifting rainbow colors, that travel at very fast speeds towards targets. There have been several other beams of similar power that Samus has acquired in her adventures, which may have been related to it.

[edit] Super Metroid
Samus Aran acquired the Hyper Beam during her battle with the Mother Brain on her second mission to Zebes. It is stolen from Mother Brain by the Metroid Hatchling, and Samus gains it from the death of the hatchling. Samus uses the immense power and to defeat the Mother Brain and finish her mission. The Hyper Beam subsequently replaces all the other beams in Samus's inventory, and it is immensely powerful. It can pass through walls and enemies, and it destroys obstacles that are impenetrable by other beams. The projectile looks like the charged Plasma Beam, but flashes different colors. It lacks Charge Beam functionality, and holding the button simply rapid-fires it.[edit] Metroid Prime
The Hyper Beam makes a similar appearance in Metroid Prime as the Phazon Beam, which is used in the final battle. Standing in a pool of Phazon created by Metroid Prime causes Samus's HUD to display "Hyper-mode" and transforms her Arm Cannon, resulting in the ability of rapid-fire Phazon burst. This was the only manner in which Samus could harm the Metroid Prime's Core Essence.
[edit] Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Samus's Phazon Enhancement Device afforded her a similar beam when entering Hyper Mode. It appears as a bolt of blue electricity. Also, in Corruption, unlike the other appearances, this Hyper Beam has a charge function. When charged, it fires a large number of bolts at a continuous speed for a short time powered by her own bodily phazon, causing Samus to lose a fair amount of health while doing this. Each individual shot of the Hyper Beam uses 4 energy. A charged Hyper Beam shot can use up to almost half of an energy tank (though the amount increases on higher difficulties). The charged beam has limited lock-on capabilities, similar to the Shock Coil, another Galactic Federation weapon. This blast is similar, but not the same as, Dark Samus's scattershot variant of the Power Beam. Please note that the Hyper Beam mentioned here relates to the PED suit and Hyper Mode. They may not be directly related.
