Logbook-1-

The Logbook in Metroid Prime.

During the Metroid Prime series, Samus Aran uses a Logbook (Log Book in Metroid Prime) to store data she collects with the Scan Visor. The layout of the Logbook has changed over time; after Metroid Prime Samus' Logbook uses holograms rather than still images and has more sub headings. However, after Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, she uses a much simpler Logbook, similar in style but not a GUI to the one she used in Prime. In Metroid Prime Hunters, the Logbook only displays descriptions.

In Victory Techniques for Metroid, Samus also possesses a Logbook, though with data already downloaded to it. The Super Metroid manual details the plots of Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus in the "Log Book of Samus Aran". In Echoes, the Logbook can be accessed in the Data Network, but in Hunters, it can only be accessed either while scanning something or in the Hunter Gunship.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force features up to three dedicated terminals in some missions, which provide short snippets of information similar to the Logbook.

Inventory[]

Alongside and arguably a part of the Logbook, the Inventory displays all the items Samus has currently collected, with logged information on each. After the official description Samus records her own notes for future reference. During both her missions in Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, a holographic image of Samus with her current items can be seen and viewed here; while on Aether, each individual item, including the items she begins the mission with, have a viewable holographic image of the item before collection.

Layout[]

Logbook entries are arranged under three main headings for the Metroid Prime Trilogy games: Lore, Creatures, and Research. For Metroid Prime Hunters, there are four main headings: Lore, Bioforms, Objects and Equipment.

Categories[]

Lore[]

Lore scans from the various locales across the planets and space stations Samus has visited are stored here.

Lore in Metroid Prime[]

Lore in Metroid Prime Hunters[]

Lore in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes[]

Lore in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption[]

Creatures/Bioforms[]

Scanning any life form or autonomous construction reveals biological and biographical information about the target. That information is then stored here, and can be viewed again later.

During Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, the Creatures section is further subdivided into a whole specific tree that selectively groups creatures in small, single figure sets. After Echoes this was opened up so that there was only one level of sub headings.

Research/Objects[]

Scanning any mechanisms, devices, or constructions reveals information about how they are used and which items can interact with them. That information is then stored here, and can be viewed again later.

Artifacts[]

In Metroid Prime, there is a sub-category called "Artifacts". At the Artifact Temple there are several Chozo Totems that Samus can scan for hints on where the Chozo Artifacts are.

Objectives[]

In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, there is another sub-category called "Objectives". Here, Samus can see her current and completed objectives. Similar objective systems appear in Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Other M.

Equipment[]

In Metroid Prime Hunters, there is another sub-category called "Equipment", where information on Samus's items and gear can be stored. Some items in the category are there at the beginning of the game, as these things cannot be scanned.

Official data[]

Nintendo Power Issue 162, page 38[]

LOG BOOK: A Galaxy of Information at Your Fingertips
"The Log Book is like a virtual encyclopedia. Every time Samus scans a vital item – be it an enemy life-form or a computer screen containing important plotline elements – the information will be stored in the Log Book. You can access the log at any time to discover the best way to attack a foe or a vital clue that you might have overlooked the first time through.
If an enemy is giving you fits, check the Log Book. Many foes are invulnerable to certain attacks and terribly weak against others. You can also use the Log Book to check your Power Suit and adjust multiple in-game functions."

Metroid Prime flash Tip/Trick[]

T5 (Completing the Log Book)
"Samus records all the items, enemies, notes and computer records that she scans, which you can access from the Log Book in the pause menu.
By filling 50% and 100% of the Log Book, you can access two Art Galleries, where you can view artwork from the game's development. Note: Bosses can only be scanned once, so make sure you scan them before they're destroyed!"

Metroid Prime manual[]

THE LOG BOOK
"As you play through the game, be sure to scan anything and everything. Very often you'll learn a crucial bit of information by scanning an enemy or downloading one of the many research logs located around the Space Pirates' operation. To view information that you have downloaded to your Log Book, press START/PAUSE and access the Log Book by pressing the R Button. From there, select the data you want to view and press the A Button to access your databanks."
PIRATE DATA
"The Space Pirates have documented their research on Tallon IV, and Samus will frequently find entire log entries that offer glimpses into the insidious operation."
CHOZO LORE
"Fragments of Chozo lore are spread around the ruins of their civilization, waiting to be translated by Samus. Their insights may shed light on the mystery of the Phazon..."
CREATURES
"Whenever Samus scans an enemy, she will download valuable information regarding weak points and behavioural patterns, as well as visual diagnostics of the creature's form."
RESEARCH
"Many items will help Samus in her quest, and scanning them will provide brief informational data for later study."
ARTIFACTS
"This section of the Log Book tracks twelve Artifacts left behind by the Chozo. Without all twelve of these Artifacts, Samus cannot succeed in her mission."

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

Samus's Databanks
"You'll gather a large amount of information as you play. If you press [START] while exploring, you'll gain access to Samus's Inventory screen. This lists all the items you've collected and provides useful information about each. In addition, you can press [R] to view the Log Book. This is a warehouse of knowledge taken from items, enemies, and objects you've scanned throughout your adventure."
Pirate Data
"The Space Pirates are technological wizards. Their research into the world of Tallon IV and the effects of Phazon on native life-forms is well documented. As you search through their ships and research labs, you'll find detailed logs recounting the high and low points in their ruthless ravaging of the planet. Look for these tidbits on computer monitors in areas populated by Space Pirate forces."
Chozo Lore
"Though the Chozo race may be little more than a memory, they've left behind a great deal of information about their society and lore. You'll find these useful stories scattered about, but primarily within the Chozo Ruins. Look for Chozo runes scribed into the solid rock walls of their ancient city. Fragments of Chozo Lore are always covered by a seemingly fluid substance that causes them to ripple. Once you've read a piece of Lore, the liquid effect vanishes."
Creature Data
"As you battle, you can learn more about your foes by scanning them with the Scan Visor. Scans often provide extremely useful information on your enemy's strengths and weaknesses. You should always scan a new enemy before engaging it in battle. Remember that you'll face most bosses only once, so be sure to scan them immediately, or you'll miss your chance."
Research
"You can learn more about the world around you by scanning objects such as power-ups, Save Stations, doors, and so on. Scanning gives you additional information about these objects, which you may find useful if you're unsure about what you should be doing. These are the toughest bits of Log Book data to collect, because they aren't clearly marked like Pirate Data and Chozo Lore. Scan everything if you want to locate every last bit of research data."
Artifacts
"Your primary goal is to locate the 12 Artifacts left by the Chozo, which will allow you to gain access to the final battles and remove the plague of Metroids from the face of Tallon IV. The Chozo people have hidden the Artifacts well, but they've left clues to assist the protector of legend in finding them all. As you find these clues, they'll be added to this section of your Log Book. Once you find the Artifacts, the clues are erased and the Artifact is shown as collected.
Note: The Log Book is far more important than you might think. Should you collect all of the possible data, you'll be treated to two galleries of Metroid Prime artwork. The first gallery opens after you've found 50 percent of the Log Book information. The second is unlocked when you've found it all. Remember to scan everything and look everywhere if you want to find it all."

SPACE PIRATE LOGS
