Lower Norfair

Lower Norfair is the common name given to the deepest section of Norfair as depicted in Super Metroid. It can also be referred to as Ridley's Hideout. Like all of Norfair, the lower section was themed around extreme heat, with rooms flooded with lava through which Samus could only move freely while wearing the Gravity Suit. However the place is filled with powerful acid which hurts Samus even in the Gravity Suit.

Samus encountered a Chozo Statue-like Torizo in this area that was gold in colour. After defeating it, she was granted access to the Screw Attack item.

The Space Pirate general Ridley kept a lair in the deepest part of Norfair, guarded by two Silver Space Pirates (often referred to by fans as "Ninja Pirates"). Samus fought and defeated Ridley here, but upon his defeat found the capsule of the stolen Infant Metroid broken and empty.

Lower Norfair was completely destroyed when the planet Zebes exploded.
