The Mega Core-X (also called the Varia X and Varia Core-X) is the fifth boss Samus faces aboard the Biologic Space Laboratories research station in Metroid Fusion.

The Mega Core-X is a large Core-X with smaller Core-X surrounding it. Before the battle, it is seen downloading Galactic Federation data in a Data Room, thus turning the normal Core-X into the Varia armored Mega Core-X. During the battle, it can only ram Samus. To defeat it, Samus must use her Charge Beam or Missiles. Fully charging the beam and then firing at the Mega Core-X will greatly damage it. Firing a charged shot at the smaller Core-X will destroy them, causing a larger opening to the Mega Core-X and also reducing its attack range. Missiles will damage the Mega Core-X, but they will just bounce off if they hit one of the smaller ones circling it, so it is advisable to take out at least a few of them with the Charge Beam first. An interesting note: when seen absorbing the Varia Suit, it can be damaged, leading to an easier battle. To damage it, simply fire Missiles, like it was a normal Core-X.

It should be noted that while Samus's movements in the water without the Gravity Suit are incredibly hampered, the Mega Core-X moves the same above or below water (and through walls). If Samus slips off the platforms, she will be at a sore disadvantage until she can get out of the water again.

Once Samus has defeated the Mega Core-X, it will transform into a normal Core-X. Once Samus has defeated it, she will regain her Varia Suit.
