The Mining Cannon is a mining device created by Space Pirates used for purposes in collecting Phazon. The device alternates firing a mining laser and using a tractor beam to suck up anything in the immediate vicinity. Despite not being made for combat, Samus is required to destroy it in order to progress.
[edit] The Battle
When the battle starts, the following will happen, in the order shown, and will repeat.
- Two or three Space Pirates will drop into the room. These will be Advanced Pirate Troopers, though as the battle progresses, they will be replaced with Pirate Commandos.
- The Mining Cannon will fire big green mining laser down the center. This will not harm Samus unless she touches it.
- Long pause, where the Pirates should be destroyed, except for the last remaing one (see below).
- The Mining Cannon will deploy a tractor beam, which will suck in everything in the room, including Samus. There must be at least, and preferably one Pirate, who will hang onto the ground. Samus must shoot him to loosen his grip, so he will fall into the tractor beam (Note: Pirate cannot be wearing any armor)
- If Pirate is inside, the Cannon will reveal four weak spots that Samus should shoot at, as they will disappear after a short time (will automatically retract if one weak spot is destroyed)
- If no Pirate, or after above step, tractor beam will stop and process will repeat.
After destroying all of the weak spots, then the mining cannon will be destroyed, and access will be granted to the Nova Beam.
[edit] Tips
- Using Hyper Mode will help a lot, since the Pirates are very resilient and would take too long otherwise. Keep in mind, however, that the Pirates sometimes throw Phazon Grenades, which will cause a Phazon overload; be ready to rapidly vent Phazon (preferably in their direction, and in Hyper Missiles) in case Samus does get hit by one.
- Destroy all but one Pirate, which should be reduced to no armor, then wait for the tractor beam before blasting it.
- The tractor beam will affect Samus too, so walk away from it while blasting the Pirate off of the handle it's holding onto to have it sucked in.
- Don't try Hyper Ball after being sucked up, it's a waste of energy.
- Use the Screw Attack in Hyper Mode to destroy their armor.
Note: If Samus falls into the hatch in the center, she would die instantly. Samus will be severely damaged if she is sucked up while not in Morph Ball form.
