Mumbo is an insectoid species on SR388, encountered as an enemy in Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid: Samus Returns.

DescriptionEdit

Metroid II: Return of SamusEdit

In Return of Samus, Mumbos fly mindlessly back and forth horizontally. A Mumbo will only harm Samus Aran if she comes into physical contact with one, and even then causing only minor damage. A couple solitary specimens are found in the tunnel leading to Phase 2, while a small group of Mumbos have made their home in the main cavern of Phase 3.

Metroid: Samus ReturnsEdit

In Samus Returns, Mumbos are now swarming creatures, with many specimens living and traveling together in Area 3 and Area 4. They fly aimlessly back and forth in large groups, producing a buzzing noise as they fly. Although Mumbos are not aggressive towards any other lifeform, they can overwhelm Samus if she crosses their path. Samus can use Lightning Armor as an effective defense against a Mumbo swarm.

Official dataEdit

Metroid II manualEdit

"This enemy flies in the air."

Metroid: Samus Returns Official Guide'Edit

Inhabitants & Eco System of SR388 (p. 19)
MUMBO
"You don't encounter Mumbo swarms often, but in those rare instances, expect to find them in lava-filled rooms. They don't offer much in the way of threats and can be easily disposed of, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore them. They often fly in a path that crosses right into yours."
Walkthrough (p. 98)
MUMBO
"These pack animals are rare and generally harmless unless you get in their way. Like other swarming enemy types, Mumbos are excellent sources of health, Aeion, and ammunition. Turn on your Lightning Armor and melee away to obtain an abundance of resources."

TriviaEdit

  • In Return of Samus, Mumbos behave identically to Meboids, Pincher Flies, Seerooks, TPOs, and Yumbos. Their shared behaviors may explain why Mumbo and Yumbo have similar names.
  • The Mumbo's face bears a strong resemblance to Samus' helmet, especially in their original concept artwork from Return of Samus.
  • It is unknown if they became X Parasite hosts, as Samus did not encounter any Mumbo-X in Metroid Fusion.
