Pirate Grenadiers are Pirate Troopers equipped with experimental grenade launchers that fire grenades which explode upon impact.

Description[]

Pirate Grenadiers are visually identical to normal Pirate Troopers, with one significant difference: Instead of the usual Assault rifle, a Grenadier wields a long barrel attachment on their right arm similar to Samus's own Arm Cannon, with an underbarrel handle sticking out resembling a Federation Marine's assault rifle bayonet; this long attachment is either a handle for gripping (to which Pirates are never seen holding onto it) or a magazine case for ammo/power supply. The launcher is, metaphorically, a double-edged sword. It packs brute force but the high blast radius can also harm or even kill the Pirate firing the weapon if at close range. The grenade launchers also have a slow rate of fire, unable to rapid fire as the assault rifles are capable of performing. Grenadiers also rely on a tackling body-slam technique if Samus gets within close quarters. Despite carrying a Photonic Power Scythe, they use the barrel of their grenade launcher for blunt melee attacks at close range instead. These Troops generally prefer to maintain their distance from an enemy if possible, in order to effectively make good use of their Grenade Launcher.

Grenadiers are located in the Space Pirates' complex in the Agon Wastes after Samus's first fight with Dark Samus, specifically, in the Command Center. Pirate Grenadiers teleport here upon Samus's return trips to the room. Only one lone Grenadier is seen outside the Wastes: during Samus's first visit within the Path of Eyes.

Grenadiers are one of the six types of Space Pirate encountered on Aether. They are also one of the only two encountered varieties of Space Pirate (excluding Darklings) in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes that can respawn outside of scripted appearances, the other being Pirate Aerotroopers.

Morphology: Pirate Grenadier
Space Pirate specializing in grenade combat. Powerful grenade launcher makes this enemy dangerous at range. Minimal close combat ability.

Logbook entry

The Space Pirates have begun to use an experimental energy grenade launcher in the field. The weapon is viewed as a mixed blessing to the Grenadier units; while the grenade launchers are powerful weapons, Grenadiers must leave their rifles behind to carry them. Fast-moving targets can close range on Grenadiers, rendering their main weapon somewhat ineffective.

Development Data[]

Data for a Pirate Grenadier appears within an unused Logbook entry within the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc. Here, it is listed as a Grenadier Pirate. There are minor changes in the final, with some words removed and capital letters lowercased from the Bonus Disc entry.

Trivia[]

  • Coincidentally, the way the grenades are fired bear a slight resemblance to both the visuals and behavior of the Magmaul from Metroid Prime Hunters.
