The Quads were a type of combat droid invented by O-Lir and used by the Luminoth to guard the Sanctuary Fortess. Quads were made up of two parts: the flying Command Module and the four-legged Main Body. In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, both parts of the robot were scannable as different parts. Quadraxis, the Guardian of the Ing Hive, is based on the design of these mechanisms. Dark Quads also exist; corrupted by the Ing. The Quad robots, along many other robots, went rogue and will harm any non-robotic being that comes near, including Samus and the Luminoth.

Quad MB A Quad is formed of two components: the quadruped Main Body and the flying Command Module. The units can function independently, or linked together, as the need arises. The Main Body uses melee attacks in battle. Though durable, it needs to vent excess heat from its body. When this happens, it exposes a venting system vulnerable to concussive blasts.
Quad CM A Quad is formed of two components: the quadruped Main Body and the flying Command Module. The units can function independently, or linked together, as the need arises. The Command Module relies on ranged beams weapon attacks. It can generate a powerful beam shield to protect itself. Opposite-polarity beams can penetrate this field, however.
[edit] Battle
The Quad will attack with a spinning attack and a sweeping laser ray. It's probably best to destroy the Command Module first, as the MB has no long-range attacks; after destroying the CM, just wait for the MB to spin after you, then boost into it twice: once to stop its attack, and then to destroy the red light that appears below the MB.
[edit] The Main Body
Once the Quad unleashes its spinning attack, enter Morph Ball mode and boost into it to stun it. After that, the droid will settle down and vent heat from its underside. At this point, drop a few Morph Ball bombs underneath it to deal damage. Or, to destroy the MB outright, Boost through the vent. The MB will eventually throw in the host and collapse, freeing the CM, which will begin to float (provided it's still there).
The vent will also appear if the CM is still on the Main Body and it uses the laser attack.
[edit] The Command Module
The CM will attack you with powerful blasts from above. Avoid these, obviously. The CM will erect shields, light and dark. Use opposite polarity beams to bypass these, that is, dark beam for light shield, and vice versa. In certain areas, the CM will also call upon a new MB and revert back to its original attack mode. (The CM is invincible for all but the first second of this, so shoot fast and well) If you should happen to destroy the CM on another Quad, but not the body, the CM will also take the opportunity to land on the empty MB.
Destroying the CM while it is still attached to the MB is the easiest way to go about it, as the Quad does not dodge well when the MB is still attached, nor does it erect shields (thus saving your light and dark ammo). Also, most of the attacks are fairly easy to dodge at this stage.
Of course, it is usually far wiser to simply avoid combat with this powerful foe, and run.
