Scarabs are swarming enemies encountered in Metroid Prime.

Description[]

Scarabs are exploding parasites that can embed their bodies in solid rock. Driven by a swarm mentality, Scarabs think nothing of sacrificing themselves to protect their swarm. When they detect a threat, they block its progress by embedding themselves in floors and walls, and violently self-destruct when they are threatened. Their blue or black outer shell is made of an extremely hard substance which is capable of penetrating solid rock. Their only eye is centered in the anterior portion of their shell.[1]

Samus encounters Scarabs on Tallon IV in the Chozo Ruins and in Phendrana Drifts. They largely inhabit tunnels. When Samus enters the tunnels they inhabit, they swarm to her and embed themselves in floors and walls. When she approaches them, they self-destruct, leaving their remains on her visor.

Scarabs are encountered in North Atrium, Nursery Access, Ruined Fountain Access, Ruined Shrine Access, Courtyard Entryway, Frost Cave Access and Elder Hall Access.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

Scarabs
"These critters like to swarm in tight corridors and cling along the walls. They're easy to exterminate, but keep your distance. Their sheer numbers and explosive nature can overwhelm an unprepared Samus. For now, use your Power Beam to take them out, but once you have the Morph Ball power, you can roll right by without taking much damage from them before they settle."
Scarabs
Found In: Chozo Ruins
Recommended Weapon: Any
"Scarabs run in swarms and keep to small tunnels and corridors. Individually, they do not inflict much damage. In a swarm, they can drain your energy very quickly. Use the quick-firing Power Beam to destroy the swarm before walking through their numbers. If in a hurry, the Morph Ball can roll through a swarming group of Scarabs while taking minimal damage. This is best done before they settle on the floor."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

SCARAB
"Scarabs are tiny creatures that live in large packs called swarms. When Scarabs sense danger, they burrow into the floors and ceiling. If you get too close to a swarm, it will explode and cause serious damage. Wait for the swarm to stop moving before you attack, then destroy the entire mess with your Power Beam. It's a very good way to restore lost energy--swarms tend to leave energy behind when eliminated."

Unused variant[]

Scarabs have an unused variant, the Frozen Scarab, for which a Logbook entry exists in the internal data of Metroid Prime Remastered.

Frozen Scarab

Temporary scan

Morphology: Frozen Scarab
Glacial parasite. Will explode to protect the swarm.

Logbook entry

Like their nonglacial cousins, Frozen Scarabs will sacrifice themselves for the swarm. When a hostile life-form is near, they embed themselves in floors and walls to block the creature's progress. Once embedded, they will self-destruct after a short time.

SCARABS
MORPHOLOGY
"Scarabs are exploding parasites that can embed their bodies into solid rock. Scarabs think nothing of sacrificing themselves for the safety of their swarm. When a hostile life-form is sighted, they block its progress by embedding themselves in floors and walls. Embedded Scarabs violently self-destruct when threatened."
COMBAT TIPS
"The Power Beam is more than enough to take out these pesky enemies, but it's important to stay far enough away that their explosions don't damage Samus. Use the auto-targeting ability repeatedly to take out groups of Scarabs from afar."
FROZEN SCARAB
MORPHOLOGY
"The Frozen Scarab is a glacial parasite that explodes to protect the swarm. When a hostile life-form is near, they embed themselves in floors and walls to block the creature's progress."
COMBAT TIPS
"These creatures are the same as the Scarabs (they even scan as Scarabs) in the ruins with the exception that once they embed themselves in the floor, they eventually explode on their own (or if Samus draws too near). Frozen Scarabs can be destroyed easily enough with any weapon, but the Power Beam is generally preferred."

Metroid Prime Official Perfect Guide[]

SCARAB
"If you step on the Scarabs they will detonate, so be sure to blast them from a distance. You'll take one unit of damage for every Scarab that explodes if you're too close."
