The Sheegoth is a large predatory species native to the frigid Phendrana Drifts region of Tallon IV. Samus Aran faced many Sheegoths while exploring Phendrana on her mission to Tallon IV. Four Baby Sheegoths and a very large adult guarded the Wave Beam in the Chapel of the Elders there. It is unknown whether these Sheegoths were placed there by the Chozo as protectors of their weapon, or whether these predators were merely resting there. Like the Plated Beetle before it, the adult Sheegoth becomes a regular enemy when Samus has acquired more advanced weaponry.

Baby Sheegoth[]

Main article: Baby Sheegoth
Babysheegoth

Concept art of a Baby Sheegoth.

Baby Sheegoths have a thin, not-yet-fully-developed shell of ice along their backs, and these shells are rather vulnerable to any kind of weapons fire. An infant Sheegoth is much more agile than its older relatives and possess their abilities to breath frigid blasts of air which can freeze its prey in place, and they also have the ability to launch balls of ice from their mouths. Baby Sheegoths seem to be blind at first (and possibly need to rely on other sensors to locate their prey), as they are seemingly missing the six ocular organs that their adult form possesses. Water seems to be lethal to Sheegoths, as Baby Sheegoths die instantly when knocked into water.

Adult Sheegoth[]

Samus engages an adult Sheegoth with the Flamethrower.

Unlike their smooth-shelled children, adult Sheegoths have a fully-developed formation of jagged ice crystals on their backs, and lack the vulnerability of the young Sheegoth. These special shells of ice have the ability to attract and absorb beam-weapon fire, so conventional weapons besides the Plasma Beam will merely home to the crystals on the Sheegoth's back and deal no damage. Plasma Beam shots are immune to this and are the only beam weapon capable of harming the Sheegoth. However, the Plasma Beam shots will still be absorbed if they hit the crystals. As the Sheegoth's back absorbs consecutive beam shots, electrical discharges will emanate from the crystals and cover most of the creature's body, and will then be used to energize the projectiles the Sheegoth usually fires immediately afterwards. While their head is vulnerable to Missiles, their underbelly is also susceptible to concussive blasts from Morph Ball Bombs. Later in the game, a Power Bomb can be used to kill adult Sheegoths in one hit.

Adult Sheegoths are much more sluggish than the younger ones. However, if angered, they will go into a rampage, trying to rush and trample Samus in the process. Adults have six eyes, so they have the ability to spot prey from afar. Like younglings, they can utilize frigid blasts of breath, or balls of ice to attack their prey. After a short period of throwing balls of ice or breathing super-cold breath, the adult Sheegoth will hyperventilate, giving an opportunity to deal damage to the vulnerable area inside its mouth.

Samus fights her first adult Sheegoth in the Chapel of the Elders. After she has defeated Thardus, more will appear to attack her in the Ice Ruins West and East. The first adult Sheegoth is unusually strong and large compared to a typical grown Sheegoth outside of the Ice Temple; this might indicate that the first Sheegoth was a pack leader of some sort or the eldest adult of its species. The latter theory is supported by the fact that the areas which initially featured Baby Sheegoths become young adults, since they've reached maturity only recently. Similarly, it bursting through the wall after four Baby Sheegoth were eliminated and attacking Samus implies that the Sheegoth in question was their parent. A Sheegoth with the same qualities as the one inside the Ice Temple is found in the Quarantine Cave after Thardus has been eliminated.

In Metroid Prime Remastered, an Adult Sheegoth received a facial makeover. Its expression now appearing much more violent, with its eyes smaller and giving off an intimidating glare and its large jagged fangs being much more visible. Its face somewhat appears more humanoid-like in appearance, with its eye muscles visible up close.

While Baby Sheegoths share similarities with Grenchlers, a Sheegoth has its own similarities with not only the large, dead Grenchlers only seen near the beginning of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, but also with the Grapple Guardian from the same game.

Morphology: Sheegoth
Supreme predator of the Phendrana Drifts.

Logbook entry

Sheegoths are invulnerable to most Beam weapons. The crystals on their back absorb energy, which they can fire at prey. Sheegoths have poor stamina. They hyperventilate after using their breath attack, making their mouth area vulnerable. The soft underbelly of a Sheegoth is susceptible to concussive blasts. In battle, they expel blasts of frigid gas to ensnare their targets. They are also fond of ramming and trampling their hapless prey.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

BOSS BATTLE: SHEEGOTH
"In each corner of the Chapel of the Elders is a square room. As the battle begins, two of these rooms are destroyed and a Baby Sheegoth emerges from each. These enemies are easy to defeat, because there's a lot of room to strafe and dodge. Whenever you defeat one of the Baby Sheegoths, another appears from one of the remaining rooms. Four in all must be eliminated.
Once all four Baby Sheegoths are dealt with, the real fight begins. A fully grown Sheegoth busts through one of the side walls.
The Sheegoth likes to charge at its enemies, and it uses a freezing breath attack; you can dodge both by strafing to the Sheegoth's side. It also has an amazing defense against energy weapons. The crystals on its back absorb any energy shots, so your energy weapons won't help. These crystals also trap the siphoned energy, allowing the Sheegoth to shoot deadly energy balls out of its mouth.
Stay calm and lock on to the boss. Strafe to the side to dodge its attacks until it uses its freezing breath. When it does, it exposes its gills, located on its neck right before the legs.
Quickly take aim at the gills and fire a missile into the creature's side. If you aim is true, you'll cause damage. Only a shot to the gills will injure the Sheegoth. Should you have trouble spotting them, look for air escaping from them after the Sheegoth's breath attack.
Just continue dodging to the enemy's side and using missiles until the beast is brought to its knees. If you run low on ammunition, in the corners of the arena are crates where you can get a quick refill."
Sheegoth
Found In: Phendrana Drifts
Recommended Weapon: Plasma Beam, Missile Launcher
Weak Spot: Mouth, side of head
"The Sheegoth is a formidable foe. Not only is it invulnerable to most of your weapons, but the crystals on its back absorb attacks to be fired out of its mouth. The more powerful the attack to its body, the more powerful a blast it can shoot back at you. Aim for the mouth or the side of the head with your Missile Launcher. If you have the Plasma Beam, you don't have to aim for the head and mouth; the Plasma Beam inflicts damage to all parts of its body. The Sheegoth is also armed with a frigid gas attack that can freeze you in your steps. Tap [B] repeatedly to escape."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

SHEEGOTH
DO THE SIDE-STEP SHUFFLE
"A full-sized Sheegoth is a terrifying sight. Your first priority will be survival, not attack. If you're about to get bitten or frozen, hold the Control Stick left or right and tap the B Button to dodge quickly out of the way."
MISSILES ALL THE WAY
"The Sheegoth can absorb energy attacks by using the spikes on its back. The spikes are so powerful, they can even cause your Power Beam shots to fly off in weird directions. Stick to Missiles when taking on the beast."
MANUAL TARGETING
"The Sheegoth is tough, but not invulnerable. After it expels a long stream of freezing breath, you can damage it by launching Missiles at its head. It's tough to get a good shot with the L Button, so aim with the R Button and fire away."

Metroid Prime Official Strategy Guide[]

SHEEGOTH
MORPHOLOGY
"A glacial predator that reigns supreme in the icy landscape of the Phendrana drifts. Sheegoths are difficult to harm, though intense heat seems to have a lasting effect on them. Their mouth is a weak spot, the only place on its body that can be hit without the shots being deflected or absorbed."

Metroid Prime Official Perfect Guide[]

MINI-BOSS: BABY SHEEGOTHS AND SHEEGOTH
"The premise of this fight is that you're to take on two Baby Sheegoths at a time; whenever one is destroyed, the cages on the side will open up and send out another Baby Sheegoth to replace the one you terminated. After destroying four, you'll battle the large and singularly loathsome adult Sheegoth. After the creature spews its breath, move around and target its head from its side, then blast it with Missiles. This is the prime way to take down this creature, but you'll also need to be ready to move out of the way of its occasional charge attack lest you get bitten--this is the attack that does the most damage. Of course, if you're low on energy during portion of this battle, you can always blast open the nearby crates; the Sheegoth will leave behind two Ultra Energy capsules, in any case. Now you can grab the Wave Beam."

Nintendo Power Volume 163[]

SHEEGOTH
"Inside the chapel, four Baby Sheegoths attack you. Lock on to one and dash until you're behind it, then blow off its shell with a charged Power Beam. Repeat with the remaining three.
After the four are no more, you must battle a full-grown Sheegoth. It's a tough battle, but winnable with a couple of Energy Tanks under your belt. The Arm Cannon is next-to-useless against the massive creature, so stick with Missiles.
Wait for the Sheegoth to expel freezing breath, then manually aim at the corner of her mouth and launch three Missiles. The gill behind the mouth is the only weak spot, but you can't lock onto it. If you run out of Missiles, use the Arm Cannon or Bombs and hope for the best."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

BrawlTrophy22

There is a Sheegoth trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl:

"A boss guarding the Wave Beam in the icy Chapel of the Elders. It appears after Samus defeats four Baby Sheegoths. The crystals on its back will absorb any shots, so the trick is to shoot it in the head with missiles when its mouth is wide open. The Plasma Beam deals severe damage to this creature."

Trivia[]

  • The Sheegoths, along with their young, have a strong similarity in body structure with the Motos, Grenchlers, Grapple Guardian and Gigafraugs. The developers of each creature's respective games in which they are featured may have been inspired by one another.
  • If a Sheegoth in any stage is killed while it uses its ice breath attack, it will continue using it even after death, until it disappears.
  • The adult Freezards from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess resemble an adult Sheegoth, as both have a reptilian appearance, several eyes on the sides of their heads, have ice crystals sprouting from their backs, and have an icy breath attack.
  • It's possible that the Sheegoth was inspired by the Shoggoth, a monster featured in H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. They feature prominently in Lovecraft's arctic tale At the Mountains of Madness.
  • If a Sheegoth cannot reach Samus, it will repeatedly stomp to bounce her closer to the edge of whatever high ground she is standing on in an attempt to get her to fall off.
  • The first Adult Sheegoth's battle theme, VS. Giant Beetle, is shared with the Plated Beetle and Cloaked Drone.
