Stone Toads are frog-like creatures in Metroid Prime.

Description[]

Stone Toads are odd-looking creatures with bulbous bodies and two large green eyes. They have a rock-hard exoskeleton which allows them to sit motionless for long periods of time, with their only vulnerable spot inside their bodies. Stone Toads prey on creatures that are smaller than themselves and swallow them whole. If they find something indigestible, they will regurgitate it. As a last resort, Stone Toads will use their tusks for combat.

Samus Aran encounters Stone Toads in the Chozo Ruins of Tallon IV. They will not bother her unless she is in her Morph Ball form. If she gets close to them while in the Morph Ball, they will grab her with their tongue and pull her inside their mouth. After about three seconds, Samus will be regurgitated, as apparently Stone Toads cannot digest metal. If Samus lays a Bomb while inside the creature, it will explode, thus killing it. This technique is vital for progression in some areas.

Energy core Stone Toad Dolphin HD

A Stone Toad in the Energy Core. It is the first one Samus encounters in the Ruins.

It is sometimes advantageous for Samus to intentionally cause a Stone Toad to swallow her, as they occasionally block Morph Ball passages, and in the room Reflecting Pool may help Samus up a Half-pipe to reach the Ice Beam.

Stone Toads are found in the Reflecting Pool and the Energy Core.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion: Prima's Official Strategy Guide[]

Stone Toad
"Stone Toads like to sit in one spot and one spot only. You will never these guys move. They are harmless unless you are in the Morph Ball form. If you get near a Stone Toad in Morph Ball mode, it sucks you up and tries to digest you. The only way out is to lay a bomb while you're inside or wait until it spits you out. Because you haven't picked up the Morph Ball Bomb yet, keep your distance from it when in Morph Ball form."

Recommended Weapon: Morph Ball Bomb
"Stone Toads sit and they sit. They also sit. They are harmless to everything except creatures smaller than themselves. When you are in Morph Ball mode, the Stone Toad will suck you into its belly. Lay a Morph Ball Bomb while in its belly to blow up your would-be digester. If you don't yet have the Morph Ball Bomb, wait a few seconds for the Stone Toad to realize you're not so tasty after all and spit you out."

Metroid Prime: The Official Nintendo Player's Guide[]

STONE TOAD
"The entrance to the Energy Core is blocked by a creature called the Stone Toad. The toad will normally ignore you, but if you approach in Morph Ball form it'll mistake you for a tasty snack. Once it swallows Samus, drop a few bombs to give it a nasty case of indigestion."

Metroid Prime Official Perfect Guide[]

STONE TOAD
"This giant creature seems docile until you approach too near as a Morph Ball--at which point he'll eat you up, and require a detonated Bomb in order to be destroyed."

Trivia[]

Frog jelly
  • A "red frog floating egg jelly" is named in concept art of the game, but is not known to correspond to anything in Prime. Since the Stone Toad is the only amphibious creature on Tallon IV, it is possible that they produce this substance.
  • Watchdrones were internally referred to as Stone Toads during the development of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
