Virginia Aran (バージニア·アラン Bājinia Aran) was the mother of Samus Aran, and the wife of Chief Rodney Aran, Samus's father. Her death came when the Space Pirates invaded K-2L when Samus was three years old. The diversion she created bought Samus just enough time to run away. Virginia herself was killed by Ridley's plasma breath. Later, in Metroid: Volume 2 of the manga, Ridley angrily insults Samus by telling her that he had to eat the corpses of the dead colonists to survive while stranded on K-2L (since her father destroyed his vessel), and taunts her by stating that he believes that Virginia was among those he ate.
Virginia was seen in the Metroid manga, and art within the Japanese version of Metroid Fusion, and Metroid: Zero Mission (all versions, includes Fusion's art as an unlockable bonus), but she also appeared briefly in a Samus & Joey: Volume 2 flashback.. An unnamed woman that may have been Samus's mother was also seen in a flashback in Nintendo Power's Super Metroid comic which told Samus's backstory for the first time.
Non-canon warning: This article or section contains information that may not be considered an official part of the Metroid series in the overall storyline by Nintendo.
An earlier character that was implied, but not explicitly stated, to be Samus's mother in Blood of the Chozo was "Captain Thea Aran". Given the context, she could represent another member of Samus' family if Thea is considered part of the series canon.
