Warrior Ing are the basic Ing soldiers of the Ing Horde, native to Dark Aether.

Description[]

Warrior Ing are powerful foes, exercising fusion attacks, along with various kinetic offensives and transdimensional energy blasts. At close range, their razor-sharp limbs serve as weapons. They can change into their gaseous form (the "Black fog") at will, in order to possess other organisms. Warrior Ing are also able to transform into a liquid state, allowing them to traverse any surface with ease. When these "shadows" are struck with light energy, their moving speed will dramatically increase.

The emaciated, black-purple bodies of Warrior Ing bear the vaguest resemblance to a predatory animal, with five spider-like legs. Despite all of their limbs seemingly being razor-sharp, only the three front legs are commonly used for melee attacks. Their only visible sensory organ is a cluster of red and yellow particles which glow within a cavity on the upper-most region of their bodies; some artwork depict the cluster being contained within a glossy, pitch-black "eye".

Often found in large numbers within large rooms, Warrior Ing are a common foe encountered within the lands of Dark Aether. Many guard Dark Temple Keys and Sky Temple Keys with their lives. Although they rarely appear in rooms containing Phazon, it appears they are immune to the natural, uncontained substance.

Eleven Warrior Ing attacked Samus in the Portal Site at the beginning of the game, with six of them stealing her upgrades and later using them against her in some shape or form: those that stole the Space Jump Boots and Boost Ball without possessing another creature later appeared as bosses and had been slightly mutated by the items; they were the Jump Guardian and Boost Guardian. The other four Warrior Ing ultimately ended up possessing creatures (an Alpha Sandigger, a Grenchler, a Pillbug and a Sporb, respectively). They were all killed by Samus later on. The status of the eleventh Warrior Ing that stole Samus's missile launcher is unknown though it is seemingly the Ing that possessed the dead Missile Trooper.

Combat[]

Darkling Possession Failed

Defiled Shrine. One Warrior Ing is in puddle form while another attempts an unsuccessful symbiote possession.

Warrior Ing always enter a battlefield from their puddle forms, then transforming into their spider-like form, followed by their infamous battle cry. From there, they commence their assault. At close range, a Warrior Ing will walk up to its prey and ferociously swipe one or two of its long razor-tipped legs at foes. At times, its center eye will glow and appear "bubbly" or blurry, indicating it will perform a powerful somersault-like tackle directly at its prey. If it misses, it simply travels the surfaces it lands on in puddle form as it returns to solid ground. If a target is hit by this tackle, the creature will be engulfed by the Warrior Ing's body as it attempts an Ing possession. Because Samus is immune to Darkling possession due to the Energy Transfer Module, this attack will simply inflict heavy and constant damage until the Ing gives up and retreats, reverting to its Black Fog and returning to the battlefield. Samus will be unable to enter Morph Ball mode while an Ing is attached. At distant foes, a Warrior Ing will channel Transdimensional energy from its sides, firing three beams before moving on with its next attack. If Samus is in Morph Ball, a Warrior Ing in puddle form can encircle her, trapping her until she escapes using Bombs. If she takes too long in deploying them, eventually the Warrior Ing encasing her will fling her somewhat high into the air. A Warrior Ing's strategy consists of roaming into blob form, forming into a physical state, attack, then repeat. In larger rooms, their swarm tactics helps keep an opponent on edge.

When Samus first battles these deadly foes, she can only rely on her current equipment and the environment available. Light Crystals and Light Beacons are ultimately her best defense against these dark creatures. A Warrior Ing will never attempt its tackle attack while Samus is in a Safe Zone as the emanating light will damage the creature, and instead perform its Transdimensional blasts from a safe distance. Should Samus be engulfed by a Warrior Ing, entering a Safe Zone will immediately dispel the creature on her, forcing the Warrior Ing to escape back onto the grounds of Dark Aether. Curiously, Samus is immune to an Ing Possession tackle if she enters Morph Ball directly before impact. In one room, a Warrior Ing lands besides a leftover pile of Phazon Canisters, setting itself up for massive burn damage from the deadly explosion the canisters produce. Despite being creatures of Dark Energy, Warrior Ing receive damage from the Dark Beam, albeit very minimal. A direct hit from an Entangler shot or Super Missile will cause a Warrior Ing to flinch, interrupting its attack pattern. Power Bombs can also prove effective when placed close enough.

Over time, Samus acquires powerful Luminoth equipment able to combat these foes with ease. The Light Beam proves the most effective weapon against these creatures and like the Entangler, a Lightblast will flinch these foes. When a Light Beacon or Light Crystal is shot with the Light Beam, the supercharged energy can instantly eliminate any Warrior Ing that comes into contact with the powerful light emanating, though curiously, this will not kill a Warrior Ing attached to Samus during an Ing Possession attempt. Samus can use a supercharged Safe Zone to her advantage by luring herself into an Ing Possession Attempt by walking outside of the supercharged Safe Zone, then as a Warrior Ing prepares its charge, returning into the Safe Zone, where the creature will ram headfirst into the deadly light, killing it instantly. Because Warrior Ing take advantage of deactivated Safe Zones (by constantly walking toward the spot where light once stood), Samus can use the Dark Beam to deactivate a Safe Zone in order to lure the creature near it, then use the Light Beam to supercharge the deactivated spot for a trap kill. Once obtained, the Dark Visor will be able to accurately track a Warrior Ing in its puddle form, allowing for more hits to land on them. A Warrior Ing's large size makes it easy to target with the Screw Attack, receiving much damage from a single direct hit (this will recoil Samus if they are idle). If Crystals or Beacons are supercharged by the Annihilator Beam, the Warrior Ing will be hypnotized by the powerful energy being emitted, halting them completely and with many being drawn to the fatal environment produced.

Warrior Ing are challenging foes. They can render themselves into amorphous puddles and move over most terrain, including walls. Warrior Ing can turn their bodies into dangerous projectiles sheathed in dark energy. The tips of their legs are razor sharp, making them formidable in melee. Finally, Warrior Ing are capable of channelling transdimensional energy and firing it at their enemies. Their only real weakness is bright, pure light, which they hate and fear.

Trivia[]

A Warrior Ing's roar.

  • The Warrior Ing were the first pure Ing that Samus encountered, and they were also the last: as Dark Aether was collapsing after collecting the last of Aether's planetary energy from the Sky Temple, several Warrior Ing attempted to stop her from reaching the only available portal. Samus Space Jumps over them and reaches the portal. When she returns to Light Aether, the legs of several Warrior Ing are seen trying to get through the portal. However, they don't get through in time and die with the dark world.
  • Samus is known to have lost seven of her power-ups to the multitude of Warrior Ing that attacked her near the beginning of her mission on Aether. However, the one that took her Missile Launcher was seemingly never encountered, as Samus acquires another launcher through different means.
    • The Dark Missile Trooper may lead to the assumption that it is possessed by the same Warrior Ing that stole Samus' original Missile Launcher at the beginning of the game, given that the Missile Expansion it drops has the same appearance as said Launcher, as well as it having noticeably more health than a normal Dark Trooper. However, the Dark Missile Trooper's scan heavily implies that the soldier had the weapon prior to becoming a Darkling. However, it is possible that it was able to use its weapon endlessly without running out of ammunition because it had Samus' Missile Launcher.
  • If a Warrior Ing is damaged just before it begins to shift from liquid to solid form, the liquid will remain bright red throughout the transformation.
  • The first few times a Warrior Ing lunges at Samus in its liquid form, a message will appear on-screen: "Armor systems online. Symbiotic possession attempt failed."
  • A Warrior Ing is present within the Logbook data of the Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc. Its Logbook entry is near identical to the final. Changes from the Bonus Disc to the final include a lowercase d in Dark energy and "deadly" into "dangerous".
